I feel the same. My mom was horrified when he took my cousins on the Rolonda Show in the late 90’s to talk about how he was protecting his future generations from the racism he had faced as a child (he’s black, married my white dad’s sister). I never heard any of my uncle’s stories, but he’s from Minnesota, so I wonder how bad it was for him growing up.

I guess my aunt never told him how the Black Panthers set their childhood house on fire because they were the only white family in the neighborhood. Or how my dad was beat up regularly just for being white.

My mom let me watch the episode because I was a teenager and I just could not believe that he was proud to be teaching his kids to marry white and only white. All three of my cousins obeyed and only ever dated (and eventually married) white people.

We will persist.
